About the role
About Matter
At Matter, we believe that nutrition is medicine and that access to the right nutrition protocols is one of the best indicators of longevity and wellbeing. To that end, Matter is the world’s first fully integrated nutrition platform that tracks, recommends, and prepares everything you need to eat to live a long life.
Matter ingests your health data, goals, and meals to build your daily menu, auto-order and deliver it, tune your supplements, and track your macros to the gram.
Personalized nutrition, run end to end by an intelligence that learns what your body needs.
The Role
We're looking for a Director of Engineering to own the entire tech stack: backend, mobile, in-restaurant systems, and infrastructure. You'll set technical direction, build and lead the team, but nonetheless stay close enough to the code to make key architectural calls and be an active independent contributor. In other words, we expect you to be rolling your sleeves designing the product, coding, and simultaneously also leading the engineering team.
What you'll do
Own the roadmap and delivery across the full stack: consumer mobile app, employee/kitchen apps, cloud API, and on-premise restaurant servers
Hire, mentor, and grow a team of full-stack, mobile, and infrastructure engineers
Set architectural direction, especially around our real-time, offline-first sync between the cloud and in-restaurant systems
Establish engineering standards: testing, CI/CD, code review, observability, on-call
Partner with product, operations, and restaurant leadership to translate business needs into technical plans
Own reliability and performance for systems that must work during peak hours. Downtime is not optional
What we're looking for
8+ years building software
Strong technical depth in a TypeScript / Node.js ecosystem; able to review and reason about both backend and mobile code
Experience owning distributed or offline-first systems: eventual consistency, sync, conflict resolution (we use a CRDT-style mergeable store between cloud and restaurant)
Familiarity with React Native / mobile app delivery (app store release cycles, native modules, EAS/Expo or equivalent)
Backend experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL), background job processing, and REST API design
A track record of shipping reliable production systems and growing the teams that maintain them
Pragmatic judgment about build-vs-buy, technical debt, and where to invest
MOST IMPORTANTLY: complete alignment on product vision and a deep desire to build consumer products that will scale to millions of users
Nice to have
These are nice to have, but not required:
Previous experience in leading teams
Experience in restaurant tech, retail POS, logistics, or other systems with hardware and physical-world constraints
Familiarity with our stack: Expo, Turborepo, TypeORM, Redis/BullMQ, Fly.io, Docker, Datadog
Experience integrating payments (Stripe), and third-party delivery/comms platforms
Benefits
Competitive pay and the full range of benefits you'd expect, including health coverage and paid time off.
